United Way Turns Social Good into Social Game
July 24th, 2010 by Joe Hamm
We’re super excited about about how Wildfire Platform is being used by United Way Greater Twin Cities to raise social awareness about issues like hunger, homelessness, childhood obesity, and literacy. The United Way has partnered with four local TV celebrity teams competing to recruit the most supporters. Each team is backing one of the four previously mentioned causes. Corporate sponsors including Target, Xcel Energy, Land O’ Lakes, and HealthPartners have pitched in to be associated with the nonprofit and this social good event. When someone comes to the site and joins a Dream Team, the corresponding sponsor donates $1. Be sure to watch the team videos…they’re great!
In addition, there is a social gaming element being used. Individuals are competing against each other to recruit the most supporters and for a chance to win a free Apple iPad. When a supporter joins, they get 10 points plus additional points for each additional supporter they recruit. But that’s the beginning. Supporters also get a percentage of the points that their recruits bring in….and the game goes on and on:) It has been very interesting to see the use of social media as a medium for spreading awareness for this campaign (Twitter screenshot below).
Social games for social good! They recruited about 3000 new supporters in the first day of the competition. Not bad for a statewide social good campaign:) We love seeing grassroots movements gain traction and look forward to seeing how many are recruited over the next month. Nonprofits Mobilize Online Supporters Into Action
July 8th, 2010 by John Cason
Many nonprofits have large followings of “slacktivists” online, but have trouble mobilizing them into action for the cause. Slacktivists are folks that “like” the organization on Facebook or follow them on Twitter, but do little to aid in the cause. Many nonprofits are asking “How do we get our supporters to actually do things for our cause?” At Mobilization Labs we call this “mobilizing your supporters.” (more…)
Company Culture at Mobilization Labs
June 18th, 2010 by John Cason
My name is John and I am the newest member of the sales team. I started less than one week ago on June 11, 2010. My first day we had a company wide meeting to talk about our core values. Caleb Clark, Founder and Chief Experience Officer of Mobilization Labs, led the discussion of “where are we” and “what do we want to be.” He asked the employees to be thinking about the core values of the company. Mobilization Labs is a strong Atlanta start-up, but the company is already concerned about maintaining its company culture.
Many people are familiar with Zappos.com. They are the largest online shoe store. While many people love their store and shopping experience, Zappos is somewhat of a poster child in the world of entrepreneurship and small businesses. In 1999 Zappos had little sales revenue. In 2009 they grossed over $1 Billion in sales and sold their company to Amazon. Their company culture is what business leaders and entrepreneurs admire more than sales growth. (more…)
Hiring Top-Notch Developers
June 18th, 2010 by Jeremy Haile
We’re looking for great engineers.
Mobilization Labs is looking for great engineers to help us build the world’s most advanced social mobilization technology: Wildfire Platform. You’ll join a highly intelligent, hard-working team that lives on the cutting edge of Java development and will challenge you on a daily basis.
Think you’re up to the task?
As our ideal candidate, you know how to build a Java web application from end-to-end using a DI framework (like Spring) and a web MVC framework (like Spring MVC, JSF, or Struts 2). You know how to deploy and run it on Linux servers. You’re into agile methodology and you write unit/integration tests for your code.
You know SQL and have used MySQL or PostgreSQL extensively, as well as an ORM like Hibernate or JPA.
You’re comfortable doing front-end work, having used jQuery or another JavaScript library to do AJAX and DOM manipulation. And you’re a stickler for semantic markup and concise stylesheets.
You think about scalability before it becomes a problem, but don’t over-engineer things. You’ve used or at least investigated caching technologies like EhCache and perhaps looked into some NoSQL databases.
While you certainly know your stuff when it comes to Java, you’re also interested in other languages. You’ve played with Groovy or Scala, maybe even Clojure. You might have built an application with Grails or Lift, or done some work in Python, Ruby or PHP.
Want to know more about Mobilization Labs and social mobilization?
Since 2004, Mobilization Labs has been providing web software that pioneers an entirely new genre of technology called social mobilization. Social mobilization combines the viral power of social networking with real-world grassroots action to mobilize large teams of supporters into action on behalf of brands, causes, and political candidates. Our software has been used by presidential campaigns, Fortune 500 companies, international non-profits, major motion pictures, and multi-platinum artists to advance the passion of volunteers and fans worldwide.
We are looking for fast learners who want to help build a great product and have fun doing it. Sound like you? Email your resume, along with a cover letter, to Jeremy Haile (click name for email address).
